Does This BMI Chart Make Me Look Fat?

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder Over the course of my training career, very few things have stirred up more controversy than the infamous BMI chart. Although I’m not generally one to say that there is a one-size-fits-all solution to every problem, it seems as though this seemingly innocent chart has become a one-size-pisses-off-all. I’m not usually one to use my blog as a means to ruffle feathers. I prefer to take a more moderate and philosophical approach that allows one the space necessary to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Please understand that this is the spirit of this post. If you’ve never seen the chart (or haven’t ....

    Why I Quit Caffeine (Temporarily)

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder The rumors are true: I take a two-week break from all things caffeinated twice per year. Enough people have asked, so I thought I’d take some time today to tell you about why I do it. As a side note, I’m typing this on my first day of being back on fully-leaded coffee. Coincidence? Me thinks not. Although this post is about caffeine and coffee, the big-picture message goes far beyond that simple delight most of us enjoy in the morning. Let’s start with the elephant in the room. No, I don’t think coffee is bad for you. If you’re falling for the most recent sensationalist click-bait story about why coffee is bad for you, ....

A Recap Of The Ladies-Only Powerlifting Meet!

A couple weeks ago, we had the opportunity to do something unique: Participate in a women’s only powerlifting meet. This event was an absolute blast! Asa and Malinda Barnes did a fabulous job running things and the ladies and myself had an awesome time. This was also our first time competing in the USPA federation, and I can’t say enough positive things about the experience as a whole. Here are some highlights from the event… Dennise Childers took home a few state records with a 100 pound squat, 61 pound bench, and 220 pound deadlift at just 97 pounds of bodyweight! Roxanne Chance, at the tender young age of 63, put on a great show with a 121lb squat, 72lb ....

How Many Days Per Week Should I Train?

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder I’ve been pretty quiet about this, but about 8 months ago Marie and I decided to take on a new hobby… rock climbing. I started to become intrigued by it about a year prior to that when we made friends with a couple who were really into it. I was very impressed at their general strength levels and how quickly they were able to get the hang of our strength training programs. For most, there is a steep learning curve to figuring out the things we do in our facility… but not for them. Also, our newest intern that we are currently grooming to teach at our facility is a high-level climber as well as a climbing coach. Similar to our ....

The REAL “one simple trick” to living your best life…

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder This has to be the cheesiest title to a blog I think I’ve ever come up with. I even went all-out and found this wonderful little feel-good photo to attach. If you clicked on this hoping for a warm and cuddly read about living life to the fullest, I must warn you that this is a bit of a dark post. Proceed with caution… With that said, let’s get that whole ‘one simple trick’ thing out of the way so those with a short attention span can leave and let us get to the good stuff. Here it is... in my opinion, the one simple trick to living your best life is: The ability to suffer and persevere.
Did I lose you yet? No? ....

How Do I Get Motivated To Exercise?

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder Today’s post is, yet another, from the FAQ file (name withheld to protect the innocent). The gist of the question is basically this… “I’m passionate and driven in almost all other aspects of my life. Why is it that I can’t seem to stay consistent with exercise?” The question caught me a bit off guard. Not because I’m not used to having been asked that same basic question about a bajillion times over the years, but mainly because I was outside of my fitness element participating in an unrelated recreational activity. With the hours I put in at work, I really try to turn my ‘coach brain’ off ....

How I Would Build A Home Gym On A Budget

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner and Founder
Today’s post comes from the FAQ file. Here’s how some of the questions sound: “What equipment should I buy for the house?” “What size kettlebells should I have at home?” “Where should I buy/who has the best deals?” If you’ve asked yourself any of these questions, this post is for you. Before we get too much into the nuts and bolts, let’s visit a quick sub-topic. The first question one must ask before beginning to piece together a home gym is… “Am I the type of person that will exercise at home with the frequency and regularity to justify making this type of ....

Our Version of a “New Year’s Challenge” (and how it went)

By Jerry Trubman: Owner and Founder As I’m sure you know by now, we do things a little differently here at The Protocol. At the beginning of every year, most gyms are having big promotions in an attempt to lure the New Year’s crowd. For us, that just isn’t our style. Our facility is smaller than most people think: About 2000 square feet and less than 100 total students… and these folks are serious about their training! I simply can’t afford to flood my gym with a group of people every January who will be gone by February, so around here we let the New Year’s crowd pass over us. This year, we had a total of two sign-ups… and one has already ....
