How Life Imitates Chess - Tucson Personal Training Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner and Founder Like many Russians, when I was a young boy my grandfather taught me to play chess. To say he was ‘really good’ would be an understatement. He was an absolutely brilliant player. Despite any character flaws I’ve heard family members accuse him of, when he sat down in front of a chess board, he was a super genius. This year marks ten years since he has passed. In hindsight, I didn’t get to spend as much time with him as I would have liked to, but whenever I did play chess with him, I got to see the complex inner-workings of the mind of a brilliant strategist. And by ‘see’ I mean he would talk to me during the ....

If You Think You Can’t Afford A Trainer… Tucson Personal Training Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner and Founder Tomorrow is the first of August and The Protocol is turning 8. If you’ve been reading this blog since those days, you know that I tend to get a little weird during this time of year. It’s still hard to believe that what we started 8 summers ago with a few ladies on a basketball court would turn into what we have today. Somehow, some way, we’ve managed to surpass all the odds and stay relevant in a fitness world that suffers from serious ADHD. Small gyms, despite generally having superior coaching, have a really bad habit of going out of business. As a matter of fact, every place that we considered ‘competition’ when we ....

Are You Where You Want To Be In The BIG 3? Tucson Powerlifting Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner and Founder In today’s post, I’d like to take you back to the basics; the old-school if you will. We’re gonna talk about the ‘big three’ powerlifts. The goal here is to share some valuable information that, when properly implemented, can improve your numbers in these lifts… even if I never have the opportunity to coach you personally. The ‘big 3’: The squat, bench press, and deadlift, have been around for decades. These are the moves that weak guys have used to get strong long before any of the modern-day fitness equipment was available. In recent years (despite many conventional gym wisdoms speaking otherwise), ....

Still, Even In 2018, The Biggest Problem In Fitness…

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder I have a sad confession, I was having some serious writer’s block this morning and did a bad thing: I Googled “Most commonly asked fitness questions.” I thought it would give me the spark I needed to get my creative juices flowing. Long story short, it was 20 minutes of my life I can’t have back. It did, at least, give me a thought I’d like to share with you… actually two. So here we go… let’s start with the first one. Here’s the number one asked fitness question according to Google: “How do I lose weight fast?” Does it surprise you? It didn’t surprise me. It’s ....

    Strength Training... Gym Optional?

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner and Founder For those who follow me on the socials, I started posting a series of videos called “Strength training. Gym optional, part <>” In case you haven’t seen them, here they are (tap on each exercise to watch the video): One-Arm Pushup One Leg Squat (Pistol) Handstand Pushup One-Arm Chinup The inspiration for these videos came from a new online student that I began working with a few months back. He is an airline pilot and spends a lot of his time on the road where gyms are either unavailable or unpredictable. He also has a history of being a serious lifter in the past, so he ....

Does This BMI Chart Make Me Look Fat? - Tucson Personal Training Group Fitness Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder Over the course of my training career, very few things have stirred up more controversy than the infamous BMI chart. Although I’m not generally one to say that there is a one-size-fits-all solution to every problem, it seems as though this seemingly innocent chart has become a one-size-pisses-off-all. I’m not usually one to use my blog as a means to ruffle feathers. I prefer to take a more moderate and philosophical approach that allows one the space necessary to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Please understand that this is the spirit of this post. If you’ve never seen the chart (or haven’t ....

Why I Quit Caffeine (Temporarily) - Tucson Personal Training Group Fitness Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder The rumors are true: I take a two-week break from all things caffeinated twice per year. Enough people have asked, so I thought I’d take some time today to tell you about why I do it. As a side note, I’m typing this on my first day of being back on fully-leaded coffee. Coincidence? Me thinks not. Although this post is about caffeine and coffee, the big-picture message goes far beyond that simple delight most of us enjoy in the morning. Let’s start with the elephant in the room. No, I don’t think coffee is bad for you. If you’re falling for the most recent sensationalist click-bait story about why coffee is bad for you, ....

A Recap Of The Ladies-Only Powerlifting Meet! - Tucson Personal Training Group Fitness Blog

A couple weeks ago, we had the opportunity to do something unique: Participate in a women’s only powerlifting meet. This event was an absolute blast! Asa and Malinda Barnes did a fabulous job running things and the ladies and myself had an awesome time. This was also our first time competing in the USPA federation, and I can’t say enough positive things about the experience as a whole. Here are some highlights from the event… Dennise Childers took home a few state records with a 100 pound squat, 61 pound bench, and 220 pound deadlift at just 97 pounds of bodyweight! Roxanne Chance, at the tender young age of 63, put on a great show with a 121lb squat, 72lb ....

How Many Days Per Week Should I Train? - Tucson Personal Training Group Fitness Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder I’ve been pretty quiet about this, but about 8 months ago Marie and I decided to take on a new hobby… rock climbing. I started to become intrigued by it about a year prior to that when we made friends with a couple who were really into it. I was very impressed at their general strength levels and how quickly they were able to get the hang of our strength training programs. For most, there is a steep learning curve to figuring out the things we do in our facility… but not for them. Also, our newest intern that we are currently grooming to teach at our facility is a high-level climber as well as a climbing coach. Similar to our ....

The REAL “one simple trick” to living your best life… - Tucson Personal Training Group Fitness Blog

By: Jerry Trubman, Owner & Founder This has to be the cheesiest title to a blog I think I’ve ever come up with. I even went all-out and found this wonderful little feel-good photo to attach. If you clicked on this hoping for a warm and cuddly read about living life to the fullest, I must warn you that this is a bit of a dark post. Proceed with caution… With that said, let’s get that whole ‘one simple trick’ thing out of the way so those with a short attention span can leave and let us get to the good stuff. Here it is... in my opinion, the one simple trick to living your best life is: The ability to suffer and persevere.
Did I lose you yet? No? ....
