Still, Even In 2018, The Biggest Problem In Fitness…

I have a sad confession, I was having some serious writer’s block this morning and did a bad thing: I Googled “Most commonly asked fitness questions.” I thought it would give me the spark I needed to get my creative juices flowing. Long story short, it was 20 minutes of my life I can’t have back.

It did, at least, give me a thought I’d like to share with you… actually two. So here we go… let’s start with the first one. Here’s the number one asked fitness question according to Google:

“How do I lose weight fast?”

Does it surprise you? It didn’t surprise me. It’s usually one of the first things a new client lists as their top priority when I ask what their goals are. I’d like to give you sneak peek at what this looks like inside my ‘coach brain’…

“Let me get this straight, you’ve decided you want to make the scale show a smaller number, so you got on your phone and called up a place that does a thing that, by design, is intended to make you bigger? Good luck with that.”

I actually don’t blame you on this one. For several decades now, the food lobby has done a splendid job diverting your attention away from how all the high-calorie, overly-palatable, highly-addictive, processed food-like substances they are creating are the things responsible for your weight gain. No, it’s totally not that you spend your days shoveling this stuff down your pie hole that’s making you overweight, it’s simply the fact that you’re not going to the gym for 60 minutes that’s the problem!

If you believe this, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you…

With that said, it’s my belief that the biggest lie, even in 2018, that is still accepted as truth in the fitness industry is that you can exercise your way to fat loss. I typed ‘fitness topics’ into the search line and the first thing that came back was diet-related. If I would have asked google, “What’s the best diet?” It would not have come back with an exercise program as the top response, right? Right?!?! Well, I tried doing that too: The first thing that showed up was a book called, “10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse.” Please excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall…

The second thing I’d like to mention here actually ties right into the 10-day diarrhea program mentioned above. The top question wasn’t, “How do I lose weight?” It was, “How do I lose weight fast?” This is the second lie that, through effective marketing, is somehow still being accepted by the masses. Here’s my ‘coach brain’ again…

“So, you are asking your body to create an adaptation. Ok, fine. The human body is actually pretty good as this. It’s the reason we’re still here and the dinosaurs aren’t. However, this adaptation takes time. How long? I’m not sure. The experts seem to think 10,000 hours of practice is a minimum baseline for proficiency in a particular thing, so let’s go with that.”

If you believe you can undo years and years of metabolic damage in a 10-day smoothie cleanse, I have a second bridge that matches the first one that I’ll give you a really good deal on.

I know that during certain times of year, it’s easy to become more self-conscious about your weight than others, and the summer is definitely one of those times. However, if there is anything I can share with you not only from working with people for many many years, but also in my own weight-loss journey, it is this: Sustainability is how you make it happen. It’s like the advice one of my contractor friends gave me, “If you want it fast, it probably won’t be good.”

If the fitness industry and conventional wisdoms have failed you, maybe it’s time for a change? Something serious? Maybe we should chat…
